Gozitan missionary Fr Gorg Grima dies aged 67

Fr Gorg Grima, founder of the Ġesù fil-Proxxmu missionary movement, died on Monday 25 September, aged 67. He had recently undergone heart bypass surgery at Mater Dei Hospital. His funeral will take place on Thursday at 5pm at the St George Basilica in Victoria.

Fr Grima was born and raised in Gozo. Soon after being ordained to the priesthood, he started his missionary work in September 1977 when he was sent to the diocese of Londrina in Brazil.  He spent three years doing further missionary work in the dioceses of Bahia and  Minas Gerais, where he built homes for orphaned children.

Ten years after he was ordained, Fr George founded the Ġesù fil-Proxxmu movement to give a better life to so many children living on the streets of Brazil, Ethiopia and Kenya. All children supported by the Missionary Movement are under the age of 12 years.

Currently, the movement operates charity programmes in Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya and Peru. It runs 33 homes in Brazil, 133 homes in Ethiopia and 34 homes in Kenya. In Ethiopia, Fr. George Grima opened new schools in remote villages and new eye clinics in very poor areas where hundreds of poor people can be treated for cataracts and other eye problems.
