This year, precisely on 13th May 2019, Aid to the Church in Need (Malta) will be clocking the 5th Anniversary of its set up and inauguration in Malta; five years of helping and supporting persecuted Christians in the Middle East, Africa, and other parts of the world where the faithful suffer for their faith.

This mustard seed which was planted five years ago is growing into a beautiful shrub. Since inception, we have continued to impact the darkest corners of earth with the light of Christ’s love, through the constant support and benevolence of our benefactors, promoters and collaborators.

Together with the 23 national offices of our international Foundation, we continue to fund over 5,000 projects in more than 140 countries every year, providing emergency aid for displaced Christians and refugees, supporting the building and reconstruction of destroyed Churches and religious centres, supporting the training (formation) of priests and religious, providing transport for pastoral work particularly in remote areas, publishing and distributing copies of faith materials such as the ACN Child’s Bible, YOUCAT (Catechism of the Catholic Church for Youth), DOCAT (about the Social teaching of the Catholic Church for young people) among others.

ACN Malta also particularly helps Maltese missionaries, Priests, Religious and Lay Maltese/Gozitans in various projects they might need.

In Malta, ACN has organized series of events; lectures, talks and video presentations, film screenings, prayer campaigns, to schools, parishes, lay movements and organisations and homes for the elderly. We have also organised religious and cultural events including Nights of Witness, retreats, masses, annual Christmas concert and summer BBQ.

On 13th May 2014, the then International Executive President of our Foundation, Baron Johannes Freiherr Heereman inaugurated ACN Malta with these words: “It is part of our assignment by the Holy See to expand our activities so that more people can learn about the fate of Christians in the world and to give them the possibility to support our activities of solidarity. This is why we are opening new offices in Malta, Mexico, South Korea.”

This among other aspects of our work has been accomplished through the effective use of printed, online and broadcast media to gain the attention of a large part of the population from various social demographics, including:

  • Weekly e-newsletter distributed to the general public, clergy, sisters and religious orders
  • Weekly programme broadcast every Wednesday on Radju Marija
  • A weekly page in the Catholic Newspaper, “Lehen”, giving news about religious persecution and ACN aid programmes throughout the world.
  • A special publication, “Witnesses of Faith”, profiling the life of the 19 martyrs of Algeria who were beatified on 8th December 2018, one of whom is of Maltese origin.
  • Two major biennial reports – “Persecuted and Forgotten” and “Religious Freedom in the World”.

To commemorate this occasion, a thanksgiving Mass will be held on Sunday 19th May 2019 at 9:00 am at Church of the Good Shepherd, Balzan.

Rev. Mgr. Prof. Hector Scerri, ACN Malta’s Ecclesiastical Assistant will celebrate the Mass which will be transmitted live on TVM2.

Another event is to be held on Wednesday, 29th May 2019 at 5.30pm at Victoria Hotel, Sliema during which Mr. Neville Kyrke-Smith, National Director of Aid to the Church in Need (United Kingdom) will be delivering a talk on “Faith and Fortitude…Christians in the Middle East”.
