A car for the Missionary Sisters of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
The congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Blessed Sacrament was established in Lebanon in the year 1966. The sisters not only have a special charism, centered on the Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, but are also involved in many ways in working for the support of young girls and women. They care for physically and mentally handicapped girls, run schools – including boarding schools, where orphans and girls from difficult family backgrounds are accommodated – and devote themselves to teaching the girls and young women practical skills, such as sewing, embroidery, computer skills and baking and confectionery. They also run a medical first aid centre and drop-in clinic in the countryside, which is regularly visited by the sick and needy of the 30 or so villages in the surrounding area. Regular surgeries are held here by various different professionally qualified doctors.
The sisters also work in the parish, where they give religious instruction and attend to other pastoral duties.
Not surprisingly, many of their activities require the use of a car. They write, “The people we serve are among the poorest of the poor in Lebanon. They include many who have fled from the fighting in the region, including the war in neighbouring Syria. The cars we currently have are already extremely old and often break down. For example, we have one car that dates back to 1985 and has already done 500,000 km. When the cars do break down, it is a problem in a twofold sense – firstly because we cannot do our work, because we cannot get to our destination, and secondly because the sisters are in real danger if the car suddenly breaks down or they lose control of the vehicle. And of course because they are left stranded and alone by the roadside, after the car has broken down.”
