Christian Persecution Today: A Call to Awareness, Solidarity, and Prayer

What Is Christian Persecution?

Christian persecution is not just a historical reality—it is a present and urgent crisis. Across the globe, millions of Christians face hostility simply for professing their faith. This includes:

  • Legal restrictions on worship, evangelization, and religious education
  • Social discrimination and marginalization in public life
  • Violent attacks on churches, clergy, and believers
  • Forced displacement, imprisonment, and martyrdom

The 2023 ACN Religious Freedom in the World Report reveals that religious persecution is intensifying, with Christians among the most targeted groups. This suffering is often hidden, ignored, or dismissed—making awareness and advocacy all the more vital.

“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it…”

1 Corinthians 12:26

Where Is Christian Persecution Most Severe?

The ACN report categorizes 28 countries as “Red”—where persecution is active, systemic, and often violent. These include:

Africa

In many of these regions, Christians are caught between extremist ideologies and authoritarian regimes. The Church’s mission of peace, mercy, and truth is seen as a threat—and believers pay the price.

What Are the Main Causes of Christian Persecution?

The ACN report identifies three overlapping forces:

  • Authoritarian regimes: Suppress religious freedom to maintain control (e.g. China, North Korea)
  • Religious extremism: Target Christians as enemies of ideological purity (e.g. Boko Haram, ISIS)
  • Ethno-religious nationalism: Marginalize Christians as “foreign” or “unpatriotic” (e.g. India, Turkey)

These forces often operate with impunity. In many cases, perpetrators are not prosecuted, and victims are denied justice.

How Widespread Are Violations of Religious Freedom?

The numbers are staggering:

  • 61 countries show serious violations of religious freedom
  • 9 billion people live under regimes or conditions that restrict faith expression
  • 47 countries have worsened since the last report
  • Only 9 countries have shown improvement

This is not just a political issue—it is a human dignity crisis. When religious freedom is denied, every other freedom is at risk.

What Is Being Done to Support Persecuted Christians?

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) is one of the leading organizations responding to this crisis. Our work includes:

Emergency aid

Food, shelter, and medical care for displaced Christians

Pastoral support

Rebuilding churches, training clergy, providing Bibles and catechetical materials

Advocacy

Publishing reports, engaging governments, and raising awareness globally

ACN’s mission is rooted in solidarity: to be a voice for the voiceless and a light in the darkness.

How Can You Help?

You don’t need to be a policymaker or missionary to make a difference. Here are ways you can stand with persecuted Christians:

  • Pray: Include intentions for persecuted believers in parish liturgies and personal devotions
  • Educate: Share stories, statistics, and resources with your community
  • Give: Support trusted organizations like ACN through donations or fundraising
  • Advocate: Write to your MP, join campaigns, and speak out against injustice
  • Form: Equip parish teams with reflection guides, intercession resources, and formation modules

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 5:10
